Building Wife’s AR-15 – Part 3 – Magazine Release, Bolt Catch, Buffer Tube
As the wife’s birthday quickly approaches, I’ve added a few more parts to the build. From the last post, I’ve added the magazine catch, extended magazine release button, buffer tube end plate, buffer tube, and rear takedown pin.
Magazine Catch & Release
The installation of the magazine catch and release were very quick and easy. Used the push pins to hold down the magazine release button and the spring as I installed the magazine catch on the other side. However, I made a mistake and ordered a regular magazine catch when I intended to order a purple ambidextrous magazine catch & release.
Rear Takedown Pin
As pictured above and to the left, this was installed as part of the buffer tube installation. It’s not really possible to install the buffer tube without installing the rear takedown pin.
The bolt catch was surprisingly very simple to install. After having to install the pin for the trigger guard, I was expecting a lot of headaches and banging to get this little pin installed. However, it went in very simple and looks great.
Buffer Tube & End Plate
From my previous experience in replacing a buffer tube, it was a nightmare. I was expecting the worst however it was super simple! Even installing the detent and spring for the rear takedown pin. One annoyance was when ordering the buffer tube & the parts to complete the installation (buffer tube spring, end plate, castle nut, and buffer), the spring and detent are not included in that kit. Be aware to make sure you order it. By chance, I ordered a lower spring, pins, and detent kit because I needed the pin for the bolt catch and the pin and spring for the buffer tube were included in that kit.
So far on this build, we’ve completed:
- Pistol Grip
- Safety switch
- Oversized trigger guard
- Front takedown pivot pin
- Rear takedown pin
- Punisher Buffer
- Bolt Catch
- Oversized Magazine
- Magazine Catch
Trigger & Buttstock
Still To Come
- Charging handle
- Completed upper assembly (yes, I’m cheating)
- Red dot (although might repurpose that from AR pistol)
